Photovoltaic thermal hybrid solar collector
Photovoltaic thermal hybrid solar collector
Photovoltaic hybrid solar thermal collectors are PV panels and thermal PV collectors combined. You generate electricity on the one hand and hot water on the other. They are especially suitable if a limited roof area is available. The name is PVT ( Photo Voltaic Thermal ).

Panels and collectors are an ideal combination.
PV modules, in combination with sun collectors, are ideal. The tubes with water that go through the backside will cool them down, and provide a higher return than warm. At the same time, the sun collector help to heat the glycol. As a result, hybrid solar cell have a higher energy yield, and they can also heat your water in a very effective way.
Two types of hybrid solar collectors
The choice for hybrid solar panels is certainly not a bad one, and it would be great if you could at least partly generate your solar energy and hot water yourself. That would mean that you will become much less dependent on fossil fuels because you will use the inexhaustible source of the sun instead. It is, of course, a situation that we all ultimately have to go. The choice to install hybrid solar module is, of course quickly made, but then you have the choice between two different types.
- PVT-panels: These are photovoltaic PV cells with a copper pipe system behind them. The emphasis with these panels is on generating electricity. This is an excellent option if you have low-temperature heating, such as floor heating or a heat pump.
- PVT-collectors: with these panels, the emphasis is precisely on the thermal efficiency and not on the photovoltaic energy. These collectors are best in situations where there is a high demand for heat, as is the case with central heating.
Performance of a hybrid:
The have a higher efficiency when it comes to generating power. In the summer, the panels are cooled with liquid from the collector section, because conventional PV panels can easily reach 70 degrees in the summer.
The efficiency is then much lower than at lower temperatures. A cooled solar panel, therefore, has a higher ability.
Besides, a hybrid PV panel has an advantage in the winter. They are warmer, and it ensures that frost or snow melts faster. Then they are more likely to be used to generate electricity. In total there is a 5 to 10% higher electricity yield.
The higher efficiency of the electrical power generation is compensating the lower production of the collector part. A conventional sun collector is more efficient than the collector of the hybrid solar panel.
Yield:
For the sake of convenience, you can say that the hybrid ones generate 100 kWh of electricity per square meter and realize a saving of 40 m3 of natural gas. Assuming they are facing to the south at an angle of 15 to 40 degrees.
The Price:
The reason why you don’t see hybrid panels much also has to do with the price. The price is undoubtedly higher as conventional solar panels. You will then get the collector. If you have a lot of space, it is always smarter to purchase the solar collectors separately.
The sum of the investment in solar panels and collectors is still much lower than the investment in hybrid solar panels.
Disadvantages:
In addition to the higher costs, there is also a disadvantage. For example, if something breaks in the electricity section, it also affects the collector section. The same applies vice versa.
Lifespan:
Hybrid solar technology has a long lifespan of approximately 25 to 30 years. Only the inverter needs to be replaced after approximately 10 to 15 years. The payback time is fortunately much shorter.
Effectiveness:
Hybrid PV can generate electricity efficiently. This has to do with the cooling of that takes place through the collector section. Solar panels perform best when they do not get too hot. In the summer, the temperature of a traditional solar panel can quickly rise to more than 75˚C, and that is not favourable for the return.
Thanks to the better cooling, the electrical efficiency of a hybrid panel is better than that of a traditional solar panel. However, the thermal system efficiency of the collector part is somewhat lower compared to a conventional collector.
Combined panel for electricity and hot water is generating 3 times more energy from the sun than standard photovoltaic cells.
Classic PV systems produce electrical power for about 21% and 79% heat. Besides, efficiency decreases when the temperature rises.
The DualSun Spring panels use the heat to produce hot water and, in the meantime, to cool the panel. This ensures a return on investment of 5% to 15%.
The panels can be placed both vertically and horizontally on a sloping roof or a flat roof ( slope min. 10 ° ).
Classic DualSun Flash
The DualSun Spring panels are to combine with the traditional PV panels. The DualSun Flash to achieve the optimum and desired yield of electricity and hot water.
Visually there is no difference between the two panels. This results in space-saving, faster assembly and a better view.
Hot water and electricity for the home
Combine the hybrid DualSun Spring panels with classic PV panels, DualSun Flash, and thus optimize the consumption and yield of hot water and electricity.
Ideal in combination with a swimming pool
The PV side provides the necessary electricity for the swimming pool installation ( pump and filters ) and the home.
The hot water side heats the water from the pool.
This saves energy and extends the swimming pool season.
It is not necessary to replace the existing installation. The DualSun Spring system has a direct connection to the current circuit.
With the DualSun Hybrid panels, you get more out of a solar installation. In addition to electricity, these panels also supply domestic hot water.
The DualSun panel has the same dimensions as a traditional panel and can, therefore, be installed seamlessly in one field with PV panels. Because of the thermal part and the PV are integrating, it will absorb the heat when it is at full power production.
This lowers the temperature of the PV part, which can increase efficiency by 15%. On the thermal side, you reach a temperature of up to 55 °, perfect as support for domestic hot water.
Store energy in combination with a heat pump boiler or a heat exchanger. You make a ZERO kit: no more energy for your domestic hot water.
